Laser Cutting

Laser Cutting

MJ Patch & CO offers a full laser cutting service as part of our already extensive in-house steel fabrication capability. Using the latest fibre optic and gas cutting technology we can deliver accurate, timely and immaculate fabrication work. We seek to offer our clients the benefits of laser cutting with a devoted consultative approach with also offers added value for money, making MJ Patch & CO one of the most sought after steel fabricators in the South West.

What is laser cutting?

Laser cutting machines employ a very powerful and focused laser beam to either engrave or separate steel, aluminium, wood, acrylic and just about any other material. As the laser beam is focused, it will start to melt the material it is focused upon. At the same time this is happening, a constant jet of oxygen combusts adding further heat to the cutting power whilst also clearing any molten metal from the cut.

Whilst laser is used extensively to cut steel, aluminium and other metals, it is also applicable over a wide range of other materials such as plastic, acrylic, glass, wood, stone and other composite materials.

What the laser cuts and the way in which it cuts is electronically dictated by pre-drawn CAD plans which are produced by our in-house dedicated CAD team. This hi-tech process allows us to design metalwork to incredibly detailed specifications and produce products that are identical to these plans.

What do you use laser cutting for?

Laser cutting is useful for a variety of applications but it is especially effective for cutting out intricate and detailed pre-fab structures. At MJ Patch & CO we regularly use laser cutting in the manufacturing of

  • Verandas
  • Walkways
  • Bridges
  • Ballustrades
  • Staircases
  • Railings

What are the advantages of Laser Cutting?

Localised heat zone The laser cutting process is very product friendly in that the heat zone which melts through the material is very localised and small. This prevents heat distortion and damage from affecting the boundaries of the material in question leaving you with a high-quality clean cut that is accurate to the range of 0.001 millimetres.

No moving parts Laser cutting also does not involve kinetic contact from moving machinery parts which can damage the detail on finer jobs such as the fabrication of patterned steel balconies. In laser cutting, the only kinetic force exacted upon your material is the force of a pressurised oxygen jet which acts as an aid to the cutting process.

Speed  Laser cutting is a quick clean process which is energy efficient meaning MJ Patch & CO can deliver quality cutting service for competitive prices which are complementary to your budget and timescales. Our clients are enthusiastic about laser cutting as it regularly gaurentees lower costs and shorter lead times.

Accuracy  The accuracy of laser cutting is by far the most defining benefit of the process. Not only does this result in smooth clean finishes, but it also allows for greater design possibilities.
