Brushed Polishing

Brushed Polishing

We offer a refined brushed polishing service suitable for a number of metalwork applications. Brushed metal can give architectural metalwork a character, personality and distinctive sleekness. MJ Patch Engineering has many construction projects with fine brushed metal products since 1955, contributing to the timeless classic look of many features in buildings and facilities across thousands of sectors.

What is brushed polishing?

Brushed polishing is a method in which metals like steel, aluminium or nickel are finely sanded using light grade bristles or sandpaper. This gives the metal a very tasteful matte appearance with an almost grain like directional finish. Brushed metal is a great feature to have in many architectural applications as it not only looks good but hides things like blemishes, fingerprints and stains very well compared to more glossy metal finishes.

Our grades of finish

Our well-equipped facilities allow us to offer many different types of finish so whatever the brief, you can be confident that MJ Patch Engineering will deliver the exact brushed metal finish you require for a great price. The intensity of brushed metal can vary greatly depending on the grade of bristle used and the amount of time used in the process. MJ Patch Engineering offer a wide range of quality finishes including:

2B Matte Finish – Known as the standard Matte grade finish, the 2b is very neutral and grey in appearance. Steel for this grade is put through a light cold rolling process before being chemically treated to give it a duller less reflective appearance compared to other metals. The 2b grade steel finish is the least refined finish offered at MJ Patch Engineering and is often used in industrial applications rather than aesthetic components.

No.4 – The No.4 finish method brushes the metal in a linear direction with abrasive grit between 180 and 240. This removes a very small coating of surface metal without drastically deforming it. The achieved finish is decorative and textured but it is less suitable for outdoor use as the deeper bristle groves make the metal more susceptible to rust and corrosion. Many of our clients opt for this finish on indoor architectural metalwork such as handrails, lifts, panels and other decorative items.

2D – Our 2D grade finish is very similar to the 2B in that it is cold rolled and chemically treated and is not used as an appearance finish. The difference is that the 2D finish is slightly rougher and retains lubricants well making it ideal for deep drawing.
