What is anodised aluminium?
Anodisation is a process whereby aluminium’s inbuilt oxide component is electrochemically manipulated to reform on the surface of the metal creating a durable exterior coating. By engineering this protective oxide layer, anodised aluminium is very resistant to corrosion, weathering and is virtually maintenance free. Due to these qualities, this particular form of aluminium is used extensively for:
- Manufacturing industry
- Marine use
How do we anodise aluminium?
At MJ Patch Engineering we use a dedicated electrolytic facility where we submerge the aluminium fabrication in an acidic solution. An electrical current is then passed through the solution and a chemical reaction occurs causing the oxidisation process. As the process progresses an oxide exterior will develop on the surface of the aluminium fabrication and eventually coat it entirely.
Why is anodised aluminium so effective?
Low Maintenance – Even after years of exposure to weather, dirt or harsh conditions, anodised aluminium is virtually maintenance free with its original appearance being no more than a simple cloth wipe away.
Integrity – The oxide coating on the exterior of an anodised aluminium fabrication is very durable and protects the metal from rust, chipping and other abrasions since it is fully integrated with the aluminium itself.
Cost – When you consider the potential costs over time needed to re-seal or repaint an exterior metal fabrication, anodisation will always offer the most value.
Toughness – The oxide exterior is very tough and is resistant to the various abrasions and scrathes that occur in areas of high traffic.
